Iolanta is the last opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In 1884, the composer read the translation of the one-act drama in verse by the Danish writer Henrik Hertz "King René's Daughter" and was captivated by the poetic nature of the plot. In 1891 he began to compose Iolanta. Brother of the composer M.I. Tchaikovsky was commissioned a libretto. Work began on July 10, by September 4 all the music was written, and in December the orchestration was completed.
