A poem from the 19th century reads: »Never returns the thought which rose from the moment – which swung through our soul with gleaming wings. Quickly catch the spark of the gods, awaken it to a flame, and you will see, drunken with delight, what the human spirit is capable of.« With Beethoven‘s masterful confession work under the baton of the 23-year-old rising star Tarmo Peltokoski, we want to end the old year filled with confidence and hope – for the composer gave an emphatic expression to his belief in a better world, a belief that has the power to convince with its impressiveness. And Beethoven had captured the conceptual spark for this at an early age: Already as a teenager, he discovered Schiller‘s ode »An die Freude« – which also calls for everyone to join in his jubilation who »names a soul his on the face of the earth«. The central idea of the text never let go of Beethoven: he adopted it as the guiding ideology for his life – after all, it was clear to him that »peace and liberty are the greatest goods.« But it was not until 1823 that he finally saw himself obliged to bring the vision of a peaceful, just and joy-filled world into his consciousness with all clarity. With his Ninth Symphony, he composed a humanitarian manifesto in music – which is able to create moments of edification in troubled times. After all, the baritone calls for a moment of reflection in the finale: »Oh friends, not these sounds! But let us sing more pleasant, and more joyful.« No later than when the chorus begins the Ode with the catchy melody, all troubling thoughts seem to be forgotten for many wonderful minutes – and thus Beethoven's stroke of genius is like champagne for the soul, especially on New Year‘s Eve.

In einem Gedicht aus dem 19. Jahrhundert ist zu lesen: »Nie kehrt der Gedanke wieder, der dem Augenblick entsprang – der mit glänzendem Gefieder sich durch uns’re Seele schwang. Fess’le schnell den Götterfunken, hauche ihn zur Flamme wach, und Du siehst dann wonnetrunken, was des Menschen Geist vermag.« Mit Beethovens meisterhaftem Bekenntniswerk wollen wir unter der Leitung des 23-jährigen Shooting-Stars Tarmo Peltokoski das alte Jahr voller Zuversicht und Hoffnung beschließen – denn der Komponist gab dem Glauben an eine bessere Welt einen emphatischen Ausdruck, der in seiner Eindringlichkeit zu überzeugen weiß. Und Beethoven hat den gedanklichen Funken dafür schon früh eingefangen: Bereits als Jugendlicher entdeckte er Schillers Ode »An die Freude« – in der auch die Aufforderung enthalten ist, dass jeder seinen Jubel einmischen soll, der »eine Seele sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund«. Die Kernidee des Textes ließ Beethoven nie los: Er machte sie zum weltanschaulichen Leitgedanken seines Lebens – stand doch für ihn fest: »Ruhe und Freiheit sind die größten Güter.« Aber erst 1823 fühlte er sich endgültig veranlasst, das Bild einer friedlichen, gerechten und von Freude erfüllten Welt mit aller Deutlichkeit ins Bewusstsein zu rufen. Mit seiner neunten Symphonie schuf er ein humanitäres Manifest in Klängen – dem es gelingt, Momente der Erbauung in unruhigen Zeiten zu schaffen. Schließlich ruft der Bariton im Finale zur Besinnung auf: »Oh Freunde, nicht diese Töne! Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen, und freudenvollere.« Spätestens dann, wenn der Chor mit der eingängigen Melodie die Ode anstimmt, scheinen für viele wunderbare Minuten alle plagenden Gedanken vergessen – und daher wirkt Beethovens Geniestreich gerade an Silvester wie Champagner für die Seele.
