Tras la estela de L’Orfeo la pasada temporada, y tras casi 15 años, vuelve al Teatro Real junto a la orquesta I Gremelli  otro de los títulos clave de la producción de Monteverdi sobre la fragilidad humana, sujeta a poderes como la Fortuna, el Amor y el Tiempo. Con el canto como un recurso dramático, Monteverdi adapta las aventuras y desventuras de Ulises narradas por Homero en su Odisea. 

Ulises es el héroe cuyo destino consiste en batirse —con dioses hostiles, con monstruos hostiles, con hombres hostiles— y luchar contra poderes irracionales y sobrehumanos para restaurar algo tan básico como la unidad familiar o su propia identidad. Es también un mito complejo en cuanto no podemos separar su historia de muchas otras: la esperanza de su hijo Telémaco, la impaciencia de su nodriza Euriclea, la fidelidad de su porquerizo Eumete o —sobre todo— la indecisión de su esposa Pené– lope, sobre la cual se enrosca el nudo de la trama y de la cual depende, en definitiva, su desenlace.

Escrita cuando el compositor sobrepasaba los setenta años, su partitura es todo un compendio del arte monteverdiano en el que resuenan la persuasiva elocuencia de L’Orfeo, los belicosos efectos de Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda y el lirismo de sus Scherzi musicali.

Incluye también el primer personaje netamente buffo —el «parásito» Iro— de la historia de la ópera, pero también es la primera en representar en términos musicales y en toda su humana complejidad los espinosos procesos psicológicos de sus protagonistas.

After the wake of L'Orfeo last season, and after almost 15 years, another of the key titles of Monteverdi's production on human fragility, subject to powers such as Fortune, Love and Time, returns to the Teatro Real with the orchestra I Gremelli. With song as a dramatic device, Monteverdi adapts the adventures and misadventures of Ulysses narrated by Homer in his Odyssey.

Ulysses is a hero whose destiny is do battle — with hostile gods, with hostile monsters, with hostile men— and fight against irrational and superhuman powers to restore something as basic as family unity or his own identity. It is also a complex myth as we are unable to separate it from many others:  the hope of his son Telemacus, the impatience of his nursemaid Ericlea, the fidelity of his swineherd Eumetes or — above all — the indecision of his wife Penelope, on which the crux of the story coils and, on whom, in short, the outcome depends.

Written when the composer was over seventy, the score is a whole compendium of the art of Monteverdi where the persuasive eloquence of L’Orfeo, the warlike effects of Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and the lyricism of his Scherzi musicali resonate.

It also includes the first character who is clearly buffo — the «parasite » Iro— in the history of opera. As well, it is also the first to represent the problematic psychological development of his protagonists both in musical terms and in their human complexities.
