Mozart compose Idoménée, roi de Crète hanté par la tragédie lyrique qu’André Campra a créée à Paris quelque soixante-dix ans plus tôt. La légende d’Idoménée prend place dans les ruines de la Guerre de Troie : le Roi de Crète fait partie du camp des vainqueurs mais il est poursuivi par la colère de Neptune. Pour sauver sa flotte, il se résout à passer un pacte avec le dieu des mers : il lui sacrifiera la première âme qu’il croisera après avoir posé pied à terre. Hélas, c’est son fils Idamante qui vient à sa rencontre : entre ce fils et son royaume, Idoménée va devoir faire un choix.

Au contraire de son illustre modèle français chez lequel Idoménée, pris de folie, finissait par assassiner son fils, Mozart offre en 1781 un happy end au public de Munich : par un étrange deus ex machina, Idoménée abdique, laissant le trône à son fils et apaisant ainsi la colère divine. Lumineux Mozart chez qui l’avenir est capable de déjouer le destin et de rompre le cycle de la violence passée ! Mais tout n’est pas noir ou blanc : la furieuse Electre - amoureuse éconduite - emporte sa vengeance dans sa tombe et, par des airs d’une virtuosité insensée, transforme le mal en un obscur objet de désir.

Porté par la fougue de ses vingt-cinq ans, Mozart a beaucoup donné à cet Idoménée : il lui a donné quelques-uns de ses plus beaux airs, des récitatifs accompagnés et des divertissements dansés qui se fondent en une forme continue et organique. Il lui a tant donné que sa richesse aurait de quoi alimenter plusieurs opéras. Elle impressionne les chefs et les metteurs en scène les plus aguerris. Nous présentons l’œuvre dans une version de concert semi-scénique par Lorenzo Ponte, qui a remporté en 2021 le prix européen de la mise en scène d’opéra. Sous la baguette de notre directrice musicale Marta Gardolińska, il pourra compter sur l’énergie et la jeunesse d’une distribution où brillent Atalla Ayan, Héloïse Mas, Siobhan Stagg et Amanda Woodbury.

Mozart composed Idomeneo, re di Creta haunted by the lyrical tragedy created by André Campra in Paris some seventy years earlier. The legend of Idomeneo is set in the ruins of the Trojan War: the King of Crete is on the winning side but is pursued by the wrath of Neptune. To save his fleet, he makes a pact with the sea god: he will sacrifice to him the first soul he meets after setting foot on land. Unfortunately, it is his son Idamante who comes to meet him: Idomeneo will have to make a choice between his son and his kingdom.

In contrast to his illustrious French model, in which Idomeneo was driven mad and ended up murdering his son, Mozart offered the Munich audience a happy ending in 1781: by a strange deus ex machina, Idomeneo abdicates, leaving the throne to his son and thus appeasing the divine anger. Mozart brilliantly allows the future to thwart fate and break the cycle of past violence! But not everything is black and white: the infuriated Electra - a spurned lover - takes her vengeance to the grave and, in arias of extraordinary virtuosity, transforms evil into an obscure object of desire.

Carried away by the passion of his twenty-five years of age, Mozart put a great deal into this Idomeneo: he gave it some of his most beautiful arias, accompanied recitatives and danced divertissements that coalesce into a continuous and organic form. He provided a wealth of material that could sustain several operas. The work impresses even the most seasoned conductors and directors. We are presenting the work in a concert version semi-staged by Lorenzo Ponte, winner of the 2021 European Opera Director's Award. Under the baton of our Music Director Marta Gardolińska, he will be able to count on the energy and youthfulness of a cast featuring Atalla Ayan, Héloïse Mas, Siobhan Stagg and Amanda Woodbury.
