In the first third of the 18th-century, Prague was a major music centre, with Italian operas and concertos, French suites, Italian and German oratorios being performed in the city, and the local churches striving to acquire the latest and most virtuosic compositions. Šimon Brixi was one of the most distinguished composers who drew inspiration from this thriving culture, while creating highly inventive music of his own. He mainly wrote liturgical pieces, yet few of them have survived. Brixi gained great acclaim for his musicae navales for the popular Saint John of Nepomuk Festivities in May on the river Vltava. Although he did not publish his scores, Brixi was a renowned composer and his music was frequently performed. Copies of his works were possessed by, among others, Jan Dismas Zelenka. Brixi mastered all the styles and techniques of his time, ranging from rigorous counterpoint to elements of the nascent Galant style. The works are arranged on the album in a one-day liturgical arch, with the morning mass followed by litanies and the canticle Magnificat from vespers, which owing to its style and high technical requirements may bring to mind Zelenka's music. Made up of superlative soloists, Hipocondria Ensemble bring back to life Šimon Brixi's overlooked works. Their recording of the Magnificat is the first made on historical instruments.

V Praze první třetiny 18. století bylo možné slyšet italské opery i koncerty, francouzské suity, italská i německá oratoria; kostelní kůry se předháněly, kde se hrají novější a virtuóznější skladby. Šimon Brixi byl jedním z nejvýraznějších hudebníků, kteří z toho bohatství čerpali inspiraci a současně k němu přispívali s invencí sobě vlastní. Psal především hudbu liturgickou, dochovala se z ní však jen malá část. Nejvýraznější úspěch mu přinesly jeho skladby pro musicae navales, květnové slavnosti sv. Jana Nepomuckého, které byly provozovány na lodích na Vltavě. Ačkoli nevydával svá díla tiskem, patřil k uznávaným autorům a opisy jeho skladeb vlastnil i Jan Dismas Zelenka. Brixi mistrně vládl všemi styly a technikami své doby, počínaje přísným kontrapunktem až po náznaky galantního stylu. Dramaturgie nahrávky tvoří pomyslný liturgický oblouk od ranní mše přes litanie k Magnificat z nešpor. Právě Magnificat může stylem i technickou náročností upomínat na díla Zelenkova. Soubor Hipocondria s vynikajícími sólisty vrací do života zapomenutá díla Šimona Brixiho, jejich Magnificat je první nahrávkou na dobové nástroje.

The star soprano Hana Blažíková, whose angelic crystal voice appears on more than 30 albums, including the release of Bach cantatas with the Bach Collegium Japan ensemble, will now perform with bassist Jaromír Nosk in a brand new Hipocondria Ensemble program reviving the works of the Prague Baroque composer Šimon Brixi. Dramaturgically, they created an imaginary liturgical arc arching from the morning mass through the litanies to the Magnificat from vespers - and also recorded it for a new album (world premiere). You can look forward to beautiful and representative works similar to Zelenka's masterpieces, which definitely deserve to be heard again
