Toen de Italiaanse opera in de jaren 1730 in Londen uit de mode raakte, schakelde Händel over op het componeren van Engelstalige oratoria. In Rome, waar opera een tijdlang onder pauselijke ban stond, had Händel in dit genre al enige ervaring opgedaan. Messiah, geschreven in 1741, was zijn achtste en oratorium en gebruikt teksten uit de King James Bible en de Coverdale Psalter.

In drie delen wordt de theologische betekenis van Christus, de Bijbelse Messias, bezongen: eerst verkondigen oudtestamentische profeten zijn komst; in een tweede deel komen Christus’ kruisdood, verrijzenis en hemelvaart aan bod (culminerend in het overbekende Hallelujah) en in het laatste deel wordt zijn verlossende rol voor de mensheid verder uitgelegd.

Händels Messiah is de Angelsaksische tegenhanger van Bachs Matthäus-Passion en wordt rond zowel Kerstmis als Pasen veelvuldig opgevoerd. Origineel voor een relatief kleine bezetting geschreven, kwam er in de loop van de 18de en 19de eeuw een traditie op gang om dit oratorium met steeds grotere orkesten en koren te bezetten. Voor deze uitvoering werkt het Belgian National Orchestra samen met het Choeur de Chambre de Namur en de Britse dirigent Ian Page, die de Angelsaksische opvoeringstraditie (van mammoetconcerten in de Royal Albert Hall tot uitvoeringen met historische instrumenten) door en door kent.

Dans les années 1730, lorsque le public britannique commença à se lasser des opéras chantés en italien, Haendel se consacra à l’écriture d’oratorios en anglais. À Rome, où l’opéra avait été temporairement mis à l’index par le pape, Haendel avait déjà fait ses premières armes dans ce genre. Le Messie (« Messiah ») écrit en 1741 et basé sur des textes de la Bible du roi Jacques et des Psaumes de Coverdale, est son huitième oratorio.

Cette oeuvre chante en trois mouvements la signification théologique du Christ, le Messie de la Bible. D’abord, sa venue est annoncée par des prophètes de l’Ancien Testament. Viennent ensuite, dans le deuxième mouvement, sa crucifixion, sa résurrection et son ascension (qui culmine dans le célébrissime Alléluia). Le dernier mouvement évoque son rôle de rédempteur de l’humanité.

Souvent interprété autour des fêtes de Noël et de Pâques, le Messie de Haendel est le pendant anglo-saxon de la Passion selon Saint-Matthieu de Bach. Au cours du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècle, on prit l’habitude d’arranger pour des orchestres de plus en plus grands cette oeuvre écrite à l’origine pour un effectif relativement réduit. Le Belgian National Orchestra s’associe cette fois au Choeur de chambre de Namur et au chef britannique Ian Page, pour qui l’interprétation traditionnelle anglo-saxonne n’a aucun secret (allant des concerts monumentaux au Royal Albert Hall à des interprétations sur instruments d’époque).

When Italian opera went out of fashion in London in the 1730s, Handel switched to composing Englishlanguage oratorios. Handel had already gained some experience in this genre in Rome, where opera was under papal ban. Messiah, written in 1741, is his eighth oratorio and uses texts from the King James Bible and the Coverdale Psalter.

In three parts, he extols the theological significance of Christ, the biblical Messiah: first, Old Testament prophets announce his coming; in the second part, Christ’s death on the cross, resurrection and ascension are dealt with (culminating in the all-toofamiliar Hallelujah); and in the final part, his redemptive role for humanity is explained in greater detail.

Handel’s Messiah is the Anglo-Saxon counterpart to Bach’s St Matthew Passion and is frequently performed around both Christmas and Easter. Originally written for a relatively small instrumentation, a tradition of performing this oratorio with increasingly larger orchestras and choirs emerged during the 18th and 19th centuries. For this performance, the Belgian National Orchestra is working together with the Choeur de Chambre de Namur and British conductor Ian Page, who is familiar with the Anglo-Saxon performance tradition (from mammoth concerts at the Royal Albert Hall to performances with period instruments).
