The strings continuously play the note A very softly, in octaves. Delicate fifths from the woodwinds, trumpet fanfare in the distance – and then spring breaks out, stormy, exuberant and colorful. We've been waiting for it for a long time: the bright, weighty sound of an orchestra! Gustav Mahler's Symphony no. 1 in D major is a favorite of many orchestras, and especially the Vienna Philharmonic, with whom Leonard Benstein gave his legendary Mahler concerts. The Symphony no. 10 is Mahler's final symphony, and remains unfinished. On his death, only the adagio was extensively orchestrated. The recitative song of the violas gives way to sublime polyphony.
