In the middle of the dark season, in icy January, there is a day dedicated to Holocaust remembrance every year. The anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp not only commemorates the abysses of unimaginable crimes, but also the overcoming of horror and the signs of hope of courageous humanity. The Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara saved the lives of 6,000 Jews in Lithuania at the time of World War II. On his own initiative, he issued the fleeing visas that would not have been granted to them under the applicable law. The now 40,000 descendants of these Holocaust survivors include the in-laws of the cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper. Born in Japan, she initiated together with the Russian-Austrian composer, who also lives in the USA, Pianist and author Lera Auerbach an international art project in honor of Sugihara. The large choral symphonic work with solo cello dedicated to Sugihara was composed with the support of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Center in Jerusalem.

...HEAR SOUNDS OF HOPE
As soon as Stalin died, Shostakovich came forward in 1953 with a new symphony, the Tenth. After eight years he broke his symphonic silence. The expectations were high – but no one had expected that. Shostakovich's turbulent, shocking music provoked the most violent reactions. The Composers' Association debated the 10th Symphony for three days. The audience had long since made their verdict. They heard their own emotions and their own voice speak from the symphony and applauded the work euphorically. The popularity that the symphony found abroad strengthened the composer's position. Shostakovich only gave non-committal information: the symphony was dedicated to all who loved peace. The sounds contain even more messages. The brutal, abrupt scherzo was identified as a portrait of Stalin. Fellow artists who fell victim to the regime and people from Shostakovich's environment are also inscribed in the score. Above all, however, again and again and with relentless emphasis: Dmitri Shostakovich's initials D-es-ch - the sound signum of an incredibly strong "I".
