Ein Programm ganz im Geist des großen Amerikaners, dessen Musik stets eine so ganz eigene Lässigkeit durchklingen lässt. Dazu der Sound der hr-Bigband, die hier ganz selbstverständlich mit dem hr-Sinfonieorchester agiert – zwei Klangwelten vereint für Gershwin, zugleich aber auch für eine Uraufführung des Franzosen Thierry Escaich. Hupen von Pariser Taxis hatte George Gershwin selbst im Gepäck, als er nach seinem Studienaufenthalt im Paris der 1920er-Jahren in die USA zurückkehrte – und die begonnene Partitur eines Werkes, in der mit genau diesen Hupen und einigen weiteren Effektinstrumenten das Leben in der französischen Hauptstadt akustisch illustriert wird. Gershwins Musik war eben immer am Puls der Zeit, die eine turbulente war – und die von ihm mit aller Coolness zum Klingen gebracht wurde. Am bekanntesten wohl in seiner »Rhapsody in Blue«, in der der Jazz Einzug hält ins Format eines Klavierkonzerts. Und was gibt es cooleres, wenn einfach der Chefdirigent selbst sich dazu ganz lässig an die Tasten setzt, als wäre nichts dabei.

A program entirely in the spirit of the great American, whose music always has its own unique nonchalance. In addition, the sound of the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, which performs here quite naturally with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony – two worlds of sound united for Gershwin, but also for a world premiere by the French composer Thierry Escaich. George Gershwin himself had the horns of Parisian cabs in his luggage when he returned to the USA after his studies in Paris in the 1920s – and the score he had begun for a work in which life in the French capital is acoustically illustrated with precisely these horns and a few other effect instruments. Gershwin's music was always on the pulse of the times, which were turbulent – and which he brought to life with all his coolness. He is probably best known for his »Rhapsody in Blue«, in which jazz finds its way into the format of a piano concerto. And what could be cooler than the Music Director himself casually sitting down at the keys as if nothing were wrong.
