In Londen vierde Händel triomfen met zijn Italiaanse opera's. De titelrol van Tolomeo componeerde hij voor de beroemde castraat Senesino. Dat wordt genieten, als de ster-countertenor Franco Fagioli deze rol vertolkt.

Rivalen in liefde en macht
Georg Friedrich Händel dankte zijn Engelse succes deels aan de bijzondere solisten over wie hij kon beschikken. Tolomeo componeerde hij voor zijn favoriete sterrencast. De titelrol, geschreven voor een alt-castraat, werd gezongen door Senesino. De sopranen Francesca Cuzzoni en Faustina Bordoni namen de twee belangrijke vrouwenrollen voor hun rekening. De dames waren berucht, want een jaar eerder waren ze elkaar op het toneel in de haren gevlogen. Het verhaal ontspint zich tussen twee broers, Tolomeo en Alessandro, die rivalen zijn in de liefde en de macht.

De première van Tolomeo vond plaats in 1728, maar Händel bleef nog geruime tijd aan zijn compositie sleutelen. Een grootschaliger, herziene versie verscheen twee jaar later. De Matinee brengt de eerste uitvoering op oude instrumenten (met de oorspronkelijke grote orkestbezetting) van de 1730-versie. Het concert staat onder leiding van dirigent Giovanni Antonini, en barokliefhebbers kijken vanzelfsprekend ook uit naar de countertenor Franco Fagioli, die de rol van Tolomeo zal zingen en onder meer de prachtige aria 'Torna sol…' ten gehore zal brengen.

Rivals in love and power
Georg Friedrich Handel owed his English success in part to the exceptional soloists he had at his disposal. Tolomeohe composed for his favorite star cast. The title role, written for a contralto castrato, was sung by Senesino. The sopranos Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni played the two important female roles. The ladies were notorious, because a year earlier they had fought each other on stage. The story unfolds between two brothers, Tolomeo and Alessandro, who are rivals in love and power.

Franco Fagioli in the footsteps of Senesino
The premiere of Tolomeotook place in 1728, but Handel continued to tinker with his composition for quite some time. A larger-scale, revised version appeared two years later. The Matinee brings the first performance on old instruments (with the original large orchestral instrumentation) of the 1730 version. The concert is led by conductor Giovanni Antonini, and baroque aficionados are of course also looking forward to the countertenor Franco Fagioli, who will sing the role of Tolomeo and will perform the beautiful aria 'Torna sol…', among other things.
