When in 1889 Arrigo Boito proposed the formidable libretto by Falstaff , the composer, aware of the daring of the enterprise but fascinated by the challenge, almost forgetting his years, freely went to work and produced what was to be his most revolutionary work. It was an operation he did not deny himself, but making use of his immense experience and theatrical sensitivity. Boito's libretto, rich in preciousness and perfect in its balance, was based not on one, but on two Shakespearean plays: The History of Henry the Fourth and The Merry Wives of Windsor . From here Boito extrapolated the brilliant parts of Sir John, added others, and inserted the amorous idylls between Fenton and Nannetta into the plot. Verdi impressed on the entire score a swirling trend, which perfectly renders the comic and blatantly irreverent character of the libretto; he thus created a sparkling opera, in which the flexible declaimed vocal joins the ingenious use of the orchestra. Memorable mottos come out, such as that famous “Everything in the world is a joke”, emblem and seal of an artistic and life experience as unique as that of the master from Busseto.
