Without having the means, Sir John Falstaff leads the life of a great lord at the Auberge de la Garretière. But the bill gets longer and, to pay his debts, the knight thinks it a good idea to seduce two rich bourgeois. He sends them a love letter as ridiculous as it is inflamed, but his potential victims are quick to discover the deception and decide to take revenge. Falstaff makes a fool of himself by falling into all the traps set for him by these much more cunning women .. But probably because, written at almost 80 years old, this opera, the last of the master of Milan, is haunted by the question of death. The face of death under the mask of the jester, it is this reading that favors the staging of Daniel Benoin. He shifts the Shakespearian plot in time and space to bring it closer to us and make the idea of ​​finitude more perceptible.

Sans en avoir les moyens, Sir John Falstaff mène une vie de grand seigneur à l’auberge de la Jarretière. Mais l’addition s’allonge et, pour payer ses dettes, le chevalier croit habile de séduire deux riches bourgeoises. Il leur adresse une lettre d’amour aussi ridicule qu’enflammée mais ses victimes potentielles ne tardent pas à découvrir la supercherie et décident de se venger. Falstaff se ridiculise en tombant dans tous les pièges que lui tendent ces femmes bien plus rusées que lui... Après l’apothéose de la tragédie d’Otello, en 1887, Verdi veut offrir au public de la Scala son pendant comique avec Falstaff. Mais sans doute parce que, écrit à près de 80 ans, cet opéra, le dernier du maître de Milan, est hanté par la question de la mort. Le visage de la mort sous le masque du bouffon, c’est cette lecture que privilégie la mise en scène de Daniel Benoin. Il déplace dans le temps et l’espace l’intrigue shakespearienne pour la rapprocher de nous et rendre plus perceptible l’idée de la finitude.
