Dans sa Symphonie n° 8 (1822), Schubert cherche à conquérir la grande forme tout en s’émancipant du modèle beethovénien. Il s’interrompt au début du « Scherzo », conscient de ne pas se maintenir à la hauteur des pages précédentes. Mais les deux premiers mouvements, émaillés d’éclats aussi saisissants qu’inattendus, suffisent à faire de cette symphonie une œuvre accomplie.

En 1918, la victoire des Alliés stimule la créativité d’Elgar, qui écrit alors plusieurs partitions majeures : son Concerto pour violoncelle, tantôt mélancolique, tantôt véhément ou espiègle, s’est imposé comme l’une des principales œuvres pour violoncelle du XXe siècle. À découvrir : la musique passionnée de Zorahayda (1874) du Norvégien Johan Severin Svendsen, inspirée d’une légende mauresque.

In his Symphony No. 8 (1822), Schubert seeks to conquer the grand form while emancipating himself from the Beethovenian model. He stops at the beginning of the “Scherzo”, conscious of not keeping up with the previous pages. But the first two movements, peppered with bursts as striking as they are unexpected, are enough to make this symphony an accomplished work.

In 1918, the victory of the Allies stimulated the creativity of Elgar, who then wrote several major scores: his Cello Concerto , sometimes melancholy, sometimes vehement or mischievous, established itself as one of the main cello works of the 20th century . To discover: the passionate music of Zorahayda (1874) by the Norwegian Johan Severin Svendsen, inspired by a Moorish legend.
