An opera in two parts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, based in part on The Stone Guest, an opera by Giuseppe Gazzanigiga with a libretto by Giovanni Bertati. There are also quite a large number of earlier Don Juan plays. This legend, which originated in medieval Spain, became widely known in many European countries. First developed by the Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina (1571 – 1648), the plot in the following years attracted the attention of many writers, including Moliere and Goldoni. In the 19th century, Byron, Hoffmann, Pushkin, Merimet and others turn to the image of Don Juan. Musicians have repeatedly used this theme: in 1761, Gluck's ballet "Don Juan" was staged in Vienna; many operas have also been written on this plot. In all these works, the legend of Don Juan had a different interpretation. In those that had a religious and edifying color, Don Juan is depicted as a criminal, rude hedonist, who receives the deserved punishment. But other, attractive features were often emphasized in his image - fearlessness, sense of honor, wit, eternal search for an ideal, bold rebellion against outdated moral norms. After the huge success of his opera "The Marriage of Figaro" in Prague, Mozart received an order from the local theater for a new opera. The composer chose a story about Don Juan. He started composing music in May 1787. The libretto, written by Lorenzo Da Ponte in Italian, was sustained in a comedic plan. Mozart finished the opera in Prague and wrote the overture in one breath - in just one night. The premiere took place on October 29 of the same year. The success of the new opera surpassed the success of The Marriage of Figaro. For the Viennese production, which took place in May 1788, Mozart made some changes. The opera ended with Don Juan falling into hell, and the final sextet was removed, but fortunately later reinstated. The Viennese production was not a great success, but the opera quickly met the recognition that awaited it throughout Europe. In the next century, it generally began to be considered a theatrical masterpiece of the composer. The current title of the opera was not the main one, but only a subtitle. At first it was called "Il dissoluto punito, ossia Don Giovanni" ("The Punished Criminal or Don Giovanni"). Be that as it may, both - Mozart and Da Ponte - from the very beginning classified their work as a "dramma giocoso" (literally - a funny play, that is, a comic opera). Two famous anecdotes related to the preparation of the opera eloquently testify: the authors worked on it in a lively and cheerful mood. In his beautiful "Memoirs", librettist Da Ponte says: "As soon as I got home, I immediately got down to work... A bottle of Tokai on the right, an inkwell right in front of me, a snuffbox with Seville tobacco on the left. A young sixteen-year-old beauty (whom I would like to love as a daughter, but...) brought me now a cookie, now a cup of coffee, now just brought the glow of her face ... created just to awaken poetic passion and witty ideas ... At first I let her very often to look at me, but then he was forced to cut short these visits, so as not to waste too much time on tenderness, in which she was a skilled craftswoman. Another anecdote tells about the composer himself's talent. At one of the rehearsals, Mozart did not like how the performer of the part of Zerlina reacted to the proposal - as you can understand, too frank - that Don Juan made to her at the ball. The composer approached the heroine and himself said something ambiguous to her, slapping her at the same time. In response, he received a tangible kick, to which he happily said that such a reaction is much more natural and now he likes her acting. There is a legend that in Prague, while working on the opera, Mozart and Da Ponte met with Casanova and he advised them. The premiere of the opera was scheduled for October 14, but the singers did not finish the part, and Mozart himself finished the last pages of the score literally on the eve of the premiere, so that the musicians received the notes right before going on stage. Mozart's music takes opera beyond comedy. The composer created an extremely deep work, full of great passions and sharp clashes of characters. Mozart's Don Juan is a complex and multifaceted image. Dooming his hero to death, the composer at the same time waxes poetic, ennobles his image: Mozart's Don Juan is brave, charming, full of endless vital energy. Don Juan is not only a work of musical genius Mozart, but also a work of Da Ponte, who surrounded the great seducer with thousands of barriers and put him in a really difficult situation. The half-gloomy, half-comic atmosphere gave rise to rumors about the mystery of the main character, it provides rich material for understanding and different interpretations of the opera "Don Juan" in modern productions. "Don Juan" is one of the greatest operas created today. In support of this thesis, at least three people who have a special right to have their opinion heard on this matter spoke out - Gioacchino Rossini, Charles Gounod and Richard Wagner. Beethoven, it is true, preferred The Magic Flute, but that was because he considered the plot of Don Juan to be immoral. P. I. Після величезного успіху своєї опери «Весілля Фігаро» в Празі, Моцарт отримав від місцевого театру замовлення на нову оперу. Композитор вибрав сюжет про Дон Жуана. Створення музики він почав у травні 1787 року. Лібрето, написане Лоренцо Да Понте італійською мовою, було витримане в комедійному плані. Як би там не було, обидва – Моцарт і Да Понте – з самого початку класифікували свій твір як “dramma giocoso”(буквально – весела п’єса, тобто комічна опера) . Два знаменитих анекдоти, що стосуються підготовки опери, красномовно свідчать: автори працювали над нею в жвавому й веселому настроєві. У своїх прекрасних «Мемуарах» лібретист Да Понте розповідає: «Як тільки я прийшов додому – відразу ж взявся за роботу… Пляшка токайського праворуч, прямо переді мною чорнильниця, табакерка з севільським тютюном зліва. Юна шістнадцятирічна красуня (яку я хотів би любити як доньку, але…) приносила мені то печиво, то філіжанку кави, то просто вносила сяяння свого личка… створеного якраз для того, щоб пробуджувати поетичну пристрасть і дотепні ідеї…Спочатку я дозволяв їй дуже часто заглядати до мене, але потім змушений був скоротити ці відвідини, аби не втрачати надто багато часу на ніжності, в яких вона була вмілою майстринею». Інший анекдот розповідає про вихватку самого композитора. На одній із репетицій Моцарту не сподобалось, як виконавиця партії Церліни відреагувала на пропозицію – як можна зрозуміти, надто відверту – яку зробив їй на балу Дон Жуан. Композитор підійшов до героїні і сам сказав їй щось двозначне, ляснувши її при цьому. У відповідь він отримав відчутного стусана, на що вдоволено сказав, що така реакція набагато природніша і тепер її гра йому подобається. Існує легенда, що в Празі, під час роботи над оперою, Моцарт і Да Понте зустрічалися з Казановою і той консультував їх. Прем’єра опери була призначена на 14 жовтня, але співаки не довчили партії, а сам Моцарт дописував останні сторінки партитури буквально напередодні прем’єри, так що музиканти отримали ноти прямо перед виходом на сцену. Музика Моцарта виводить оперу за рамки комедії. Композитор створив надзвичайно глибокий твір, сповнений великих пристрастей і гострих зіткнень характерів. Дон Жуан Моцарта – образ складний і багатогранний. Прирікаючи свого героя на загибель, композитор в той же час поетизує, облагороджує його образ: моцартовський Дон Жуан відважний, чарівний, сповнений нескінченої життєвої енергії. Дон Жуан – не тільки витвір музичного генія Моцарта, але й твір Да Понте, який оточив великого звабника тисячами перепон і поставив його у справді скрутне становище. Наполовину похмура, наполовину комічна атмосфера породила чутки про загадковість головного героя, вона дає багатий матеріал для осмислення і різних трактовок опери «Дон Жуан» в сучасних постановках. «Дон Жуан» – одна з найвеличніших з усіх створених на сьогодні опер. На підтвердження цієї тези висловились принаймні троє людей, які мають особливе право на те, аби їх думка з цього приводу була почута – Джоаккіно Россіні, Шарль Гуно і Ріхард Вагнер. Бетховен, щоправда, віддавав перевагу «Чарівній флейті», але це тому, що він вважав сюжет «Дон Жуана» аморальним. П. І. Чайковський в своїй статті 1873 року охарактеризував «Дон Жуана» так: «Моцарт – геній сильний, багатогранний, глибокий – застарів лише своїми формами інструментальної музики; у сфері опери він і донині не має жодного суперника. …Якщо є опера, яку можна назвати першою між усіма, то, відверто кажучи, я віддав би цю першість «Дон Жуану». …У «Дон Жуані» стільки краси, стільки багатющого музичного матеріалу, що його вистачило б на дюжину наших сучасних опер, автори яких, в гонитві за реалізмом, правдивістю, правильністю декламації, забувають в своєму наївному донкіхотстві, що найперша умова всякого художнього твору – краса».
