“Innovativo” è l’aggettivo che più caratterizza i nostri tempi: imperativo morale per qualsiasi progetto, ricerca, strategia di successo. Le tre pagine in programma corrispondono pienamente a un intento squisitamente innovativo. E la qualità eccellente che esprimono è debitrice della volontà di rinnovamento che le ispirò. Al pubblico della Vienna giuseppina dove Mozart è da poco approdato, tentando la vita avventurosa del musicista free lance, è destinato il Concerto K. 414. Insieme ai compagni 413 e 415 fa parte d’un primo gruppo di lavori, su ben 17 concerti per pianoforte scritti in un decennio per Vienna, concepiti nell’inverno 1782/83 come proprio repertorio per i concerti (“accademie”) organizzati nella città che Mozart definiva «il regno del pianoforte». Il compositore illustrò la serie il 28 dicembre 1782 al padre Leopold, cui spiegò la brillante strategia adottata per coinvolgere un pubblico nuovo: «Questi concerti sono proprio a metà strada tra il troppo difficile e il troppo facile, molto brillanti, gradevoli all’orecchio pur senza cadere nella vuotaggine; qua e là anche gli intenditori avranno di che essere soddisfatti, ma in modo che anche coloro che non lo sono proveranno piacere senza sapere perché». Nel Concerto K. 414 l’impianto classico è inaugurato da un vasto Allegro che insolitamente mantiene la radiosa tonalità d’impianto (La maggiore) per l’intera introduzione orchestrale, durante la quale sfilano tre temi dal brio elegante e dal tono sbarazzino. Reclutata un’ulteriore idea tematica nello sviluppo, la ripresa abbreviata si annuncia col gesto enfatico d’una pausa generale. Il II tempo rappresenta un omaggio a Johann Christian Bach, l’amico e maestro scomparso il 1° gennaio di quel 1782: Mozart mutua il tema dell’Andante grazioso di un’ouverture scritta da questi nel 1763, piegandolo, sulla tastiera del pianoforte, a malinconiche inflessioni in minore. Frivola leggerezza e raffinata complessità di scrittura si fondono nel rondò bipartito (Allegretto) in cui l’orchestra collabora a irretire l’ascoltatore con l’affabilità del suo eloquio, fino alla vetrina solistica dell’ultima cadenza.Forse iniziato negli stessi mesi, il Concerto K. 449 venne ultimato il 9 febbraio 1784, a inaugurare la serie di sei meravigliosi titoli che configureranno un vero e proprio anno del concerto per tastiera. Mozart l’annuncerà al padre come «d’un genere tutto speciale, pensato piuttosto per piccola che per grande orchestra». In effetti d’una concezione nuova si tratta, che attinge all’esperienza del sofisticato sinfonismo della “Linz” per offrire un lavoro di densità cameristica, in cui il virtuosismo del solista, a cominciare dalla talentuosa allieva dedicataria Barbara von Ployer, emerga in dialogo stretto con l’orchestra. Si considerino gli incipit dei tre tempi per apprezzarne varietà e ambizione: il tortuoso percorso armonico (si raggiunge perfino il cupo fa minore) che compie in poche battute la drammatica introduzione dell’Allegro vivace; la serena cantabilità che l’orchestra effonde ad apertura dell’Andante, prontamente fatta propria dal solista; il linguaggio buffo che prorompe, con un temino più che mai sghembo,  direttamente dalle tavole del dramma giocoso con il monotematico Allegro ma non troppo conclusivo.Se Mozart aveva risolto in termini innovativi il “problema” del concerto, una vera rivoluzione è quella che opera Beethoven con il proprio Quarto. Il compositore ormai maturo – la composizione risale al 1805-6 – conquista una formula personalissima anche in questo genere, brucia ogni residuo di imitazione mozartiana e soprattutto si distanzia dal brillante concertismo alla moda, in cui l’apporto dell’orchestra è minimo per esaltare il virtuosismo del solista. A questo schema semplicistico il grande rivoluzionario risponde con un progetto originale, che fa della cifra dell’intimità la tinta fondamentale del concerto, unico anche nel catalogo beethoveniano, additando la via al concerto d’ispirazione poetica, come l’intenderanno Schumann e Brahms. Non a caso occorrerà attendere Mendelssohn perché questo concerto s’imponga nel repertorio. Persino la presentazione del lavoro, dedicato all’allievo, amico e patrono Rodolfo d’Asburgo, fratello dell’imperatore d’Austria, avvenne in un contesto intimo, semiprivato, a Palais Lobkowitz già nel 1807, insieme alla Quarta sinfonia, mentre il debutto pubblico fu il 22 dicembre 1808, nella leggendaria accademia monstre che tenne a battesimo anche la Quinta e Sesta Sinfonia, con Beethoven per l’ultima volta alla tastiera e alla direzione. Presente quella sera, Johann Friedrich Reichardt ricordava «un nuovo concerto per pianoforte di enorme difficoltà, che Beethoven eseguì con stupefacente bravura, in tempi velocissimi», il cui Adagio gli apparve «un capolavoro dal canto bello, intensamente elaborato, che egli davvero cantò sul suo strumento con un sentimento profondo e malinconico». Difficile il concerto lo è davvero, tanto che Beethoven penò a farlo eseguire. Meravigliosamente fecondo è il terreno da cui prese forma, nel periodo in cui il compositore lavorava alla Quinta e al primo Fidelio, tanto che le tre partiture condividono i fogli degli abbozzi. Occorrerà convenire con l’«Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung» che nel 1809 definiva il concerto «una delle [composizioni] più originali e, in particolare nei primi due movimenti, delle più eccellenti e ricche di spirito di questo Maestro». Il rapporto tra solista e orchestra è nuovo e personale, con il primo spesso a imporsi sulla seconda, con il suo portato di gioie e dolori intimi. Avviene dall’avvio del concerto, novità formale assoluta, con il pianoforte che espone dimesso il tema principale, dal profilo affine a quello della Quinta sinfonia, prima dell’entrata, in punta di piedi, dell’orchestra. Non meno che romanzesca l’impaginazione del monumentale Allegro moderato d’apertura, tra percorsi modulanti inattesi, sviluppo drammatico e quieti ricami melodici. Singolare l’Andante con moto che contrappone la perorazione del solista all’inflessibile opposizione dell’orchestra, limitata agli archi ma non meno feroce: dialettica in cui, dal 1859, si legge l’opposizione tra Orfeo e le Furie. Lo spirito del concerto più tradizionale sopravvive nel Rondò finale, «marziale e insieme amabile come un eroe ariostesco» (Giovanni Carli Ballola).

“Innovative” is the adjective that most characterizes our times: a moral imperative for any successful project, research or strategy. The three pages in the program fully correspond to an exquisitely innovative intent. And the excellent quality they express is due to the desire for renewal that inspired them. The Concert is intended for the public of Josephan Vienna where Mozart has recently arrived, attempting the adventurous life of the freelance musician.K. 414. Together with his companions 413 and 415 he is part of a first group of works, on as many as 17 piano concerts written in a decade for Vienna, conceived in the winter of 1782/83 as his own repertoire for the concerts ("academies" ) organized in the city that Mozart called "the realm of the piano". The composer illustrated the series on 28 December 1782 to his father Leopold, to whom he explained the brilliant strategy adopted to involve a new audience: «These concerts are just halfway between too difficult and too easy, very brilliant, pleasing to the ear without falling into emptiness; here and there even connoisseurs will find something to be satisfied, but in such a way that even those who are not connoisseurs will feel pleasure without knowing why». In Concerto K. 414 the classical structure is inaugurated by a vastAllegro which unusually maintains the radiant key of the system (A major) for the entire orchestral introduction, during which three themes parade with an elegant panache and a cheeky tone. Having recruited a further thematic idea in the development, the abbreviated reprise is announced with the emphatic gesture of a general pause. The second movement represents a tribute to Johann Christian Bach, the friend and teacher who died on 1 January of that 1782: Mozart borrows the theme of the Andante graceful of an overture written by him in 1763, bending it, on the piano keyboard, to melancholic minor inflections. Frivolous lightness and refined complexity of writing merge in the bipartite rondo ( Allegretto) in which the orchestra collaborates to ensnare the listener with the affability of its speech, up to the solo showcase of the last cadenza.Perhaps started in the same months, the ConcertoK. 449 was completed on February 9, 1784, to inaugurate the series of six wonderful titles that will configure a real year of the keyboard concert. Mozart would announce it to his father as «of a very special genre, thought rather for small than for large orchestra». In fact, it is a new conception, which draws on the experience of the sophisticated symphonism of the "Linz" to offer a work of chamber density, in which the virtuosity of the soloist, starting with the talented student Barbara von Ployer, emerges in dialogue tight with the orchestra. Consider the incipits of the three movements to appreciate their variety and ambition: the tortuous harmonic path (even reaching the gloomy F minor) which completes the dramatic introduction of the Allegro vivacious in just a few bars; the serene singability that the orchestra pours out at the opening of the Andante , readily adopted by the soloist; the funny language that bursts out, with a more crooked theme than ever, directly from the tables of the playful drama with the monothematic Allegro ma non molto conclusive.If Mozart had solved the "problem" of the concert in innovative terms, a real revolution is the one that Beethoven brings about with his Quarto. The now mature composer – the composition dates back to 1805-6 – conquers a very personal formula also in this genre, burns every residue of Mozartian imitation and above all distances himself from the brilliant concertism in fashion, in which the contribution of the orchestra is minimal to exalt the virtuosity of the soloist. The great revolutionary responds to this simplistic scheme with an original project, which makes the key to intimacy the fundamental color of the concert, also unique in Beethoven's catalogue, pointing the way to the concert of poetic inspiration, as understood by Schumann and Brahms. It is no coincidence that it will be necessary to wait for Mendelssohn for this concert to establish itself in the repertoire. Even the presentation of the work, dedicated to the pupil, friend and patron Rudolf of Habsburg, brother of the emperor of Austria,Fourth symphony , while the public debut was on December 22, 1808, in the legendary monstre academy which also christened the Fifth and Sixth symphonies , with Beethoven at the keyboard and conducting for the last time. Present that evening, Johann Friedrich Reichardt recalled "a new piano concerto of enormous difficulty, which Beethoven performed with astonishing skill, in very fast tempos", whose Adagioit appeared to him "a masterpiece of beautiful, intensely elaborate singing, which he really sang on his instrument with a deep and melancholy feeling". The concert really is difficult, so much so that Beethoven struggled to have it performed. The ground from which it took shape is wonderfully fertile, in the period in which the composer was working on the Quinta and on the first Fidelio, so much so that the three scores share the sketch sheets. It will be necessary to agree with the «Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung» which in 1809 defined the concert as «one of the most original [compositions] and, in particular in the first two movements, one of the most excellent and rich in spirit of this Maestro». The relationship between soloist and orchestra is new and personal, with the first often imposing itself on the second, with its flow of intimate joys and sorrows. It comes from the start of the concert, an absolute formal novelty, with the piano resignedly exposing the main theme, with a profile similar to that of the Fifth Symphony , before the orchestra enters on tiptoe. The layout of the monumental Allegro moderato is no less romanticopening, between unexpected modulating paths, dramatic development and quiet melodic embroideries. The Andante con moto is singular, which contrasts the peroration of the soloist with the inflexible opposition of the orchestra, limited to the strings but no less ferocious: a dialectic in which, since 1859, the opposition between Orpheus and the Furies can be read. The spirit of the more traditional concerto survives in the final Rondò , «martial and at the same time amiable like an Ariosto hero» (Giovanni Carli Ballola).
