Im Festsaal der pontevedrinischen Gesandtschaft geht es hoch her. Je mehr Champagner fliesst, desto patriotischer fühlt man sich am Geburtstag des fernen Landesvaters – zumal unklar ist, wie lange man sich den Luxus noch leisten kann. Denn die stinkreiche, frisch verwitwete Landsmännin Hanna Glawari wird heftig von ausländischen Mitgiftjägern belagert. Und entsprechend heftig zermartert sich Gastgeber Baron Zeta sein ohnehin beschränktes Hirn, wie Hannas Millionen dem Vaterland zu erhalten wären. Er verfällt auf die glorreiche Idee, den Grafen Danilo, seinen arbeitsscheuen, aber erotisch umtriebigen Sekretär, auf die Dame anzusetzen. Der allerdings entwickelt geradezu unglaubliche Skrupel, als er in der Millionenwitwe just die Frau erkennt, die er vor ihrer Ehe liebte und immer noch liebt. Sogleich quittiert er den Dienst als Heiratsschwindler im Dienste des Vaterlandes – aber so einfach ist das alles nicht …


«Die lustige Witwe» ist die wohl beliebteste Operette des österreichisch-ungarischen Komponisten FRANZ LEHÁR (1870–1948), wegen ihrer niveauvollen Leichtigkeit und der Grazie ihrer Melodien einerseits, und wegen ihrer grandiosen men­schlichen Komik andererseits. Nicht klamaukige Buffoszenen und Gags um der Gags willen werden geboten, sondern geistreicher Witz mit perfektem Timing für die Pointen. Wer könnte diese Operette schwungvoller und mitreissender aufführen als das THALIA THEATER WIEN, dessen Produktionen sich stets durch besonders temporeiche Inszenierungen auszeichnen.
