Barcelona's prestigious Teatre del Liceu presents Mozart's beloved Singspiel in an elegant, sober staging by Christof Loy, with a magnificent cast of top international stars led by coloratura soprano Diana Damrau, who is making her debut at Spain's largest and most important opera house. Damrau's "crystal clear high notes... and her charismatic stage presence announced from her very first appearance that we were dealing with a great singer here," according to Opera News. Others hailed her as "the only true consistency there is" (Seen and Heard). The blonde is interpreted by the strikingly beautiful and agile Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko, while the elegant tenor Christoph Strehl shines in the demanding role of Konstanze's lover Belmonte. Norbert Ernst is a light and engaging Pedrillo and the bass Franz-Josef Selig is a rich, deep Osmin. The German actor Christoph Quest lends noblesse and grandeur to the speaking role of Bassa Selim. Director Christof Loy shows "a detailed, cleverly theatrical production". In this staging he gives us a glimpse of a scenario
in which both Konstanze and Blonde have developed deep feelings of respect, admiration and even love for their captors. It's an enticing approach that shatters the traditional good/bad scheme. In the nimble hands of period music specialist Ivor Bolton, "the delicate, attentive orchestral playing matched the precision of the staging and the quality of the singing" (Opera News).

Christof Loy's "Abduction" is shot through with melancholy. Ivor Bolton elicits a transparent, historically toughened performance from the Liceu Orchestra, and Diana Damrau shines as Konstanze.
