»Deutsche Einheit« – gibt es so etwas auch in der Musik?
Im Gegenteil, Musik ist immer Vielfalt! Wir begehen den Feiertag also mit einem Abend der musikalischen Diversität, der Barock, Klassik und Romantik umspannt.

Ist denn nicht Sinfonie gleich Sinfonie?
Den Anfang im Programm macht eine Sinfonie, noch aus der Zeit, als der Begriff eine instrumentale Einleitung bezeichnete. Sie stammt aus Bachs Kantate »Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir« (1731). Sieben Jahrzehnte hat sich die Sinfonie zu einer selbständigen Großform gemausert, wovon Beethovens überschäumende 2. Sinfonie (1801/1802) Zeugnis ablegt. Um noch einmal gut 70 Jahre jünger ist die »zweite Zweite« des Abends, jene von Brahms, dem dritten großen B des Konzerts. Lange hatte der Meister aus Hamburg gezaudert, angesichts von Beethovens mächtigem Schatten überhaupt Sinfonien zu wagen – seine Zweite (1877) wird mittlerweile als eine seiner populärsten Instrumentalkompositionen betrachtet.

Isn't a symphony the same as a symphony?
The program begins with a symphony, from the time when the term referred to an instrumental introduction. It comes from Bach's cantata "We thank you, God, we thank you" (1731). For seven decades, the symphony blossomed into an independent major form, as evidenced by Beethoven's exuberant 2nd symphony (1801/1802). The »second second« of the evening, that of Brahms, the third big B flat of the concerto, is a good 70 years younger. The master from Hamburg hesitated for a long time before even daring to write symphonies in view of Beethoven's powerful shadow - his Second (1877) is now regarded as one of his most popular instrumental compositions.
