DER ZIGEUNERBARON - Stadttheater Klagenfurt - Bericht KT 1

Sándor Barinkay's Hungarian family once had to flee from the Turkish conquerors. Years later he now returns to his homeland; the family castle has fallen into ruin and most of their possessions have been lost. But when the gypsy woman Czipra in Barinkay recognizes the son of the former landowner, the local gypsies appoint him their baron. He soon falls in love with Czipra's foster daughter Saffi, and together they find an old family treasure. Happiness seems perfect...On October 24, 1885, the operetta of the waltz king was premiered at the Theater an der Wien. It was enormously successful and was performed on around 140 stages during the composer's lifetime. Strauss and his librettist Ignaz Schnitzer staged a theme that was central to the Danube monarchy, one that has lost none of its political explosiveness and relevance today.

The British director Sam Brown and his ensemble have created an entertaining, imaginative and spirited production. He has already been awarded the European Opera Directing Prize and - together with his set designer Annemarie Woods - the Ring Award 2011. Marius Burkert, who has been successful at the Graz Opera and at the Lehar Festival with numerous operetta and musical productions, will be the musical director. The main roles are Mehrzad Montazeri, member of the Vienna Volksoper, as Sándor Barinkay, the Bavarian tenor Richard Wiedl as Kálmán Zsupán, Stefanie C. Braun as Saffi and Sibylla Duffe as Arsena.
