Die Uraufführung des Freischütz fand 1821 zur Neueröffnung des Berliner Schauspielhauses von Schinkel statt und wurde frenetisch begrüßt als die erste deutsche Nationaloper. Seither ist das beliebte Werk von Regisseur:innen so intensiv und vielfältig kritisch befragt worden, wie sonst wohl nur Wagneropern. Denn das dramatische Problem des Librettos von Friedrich Kind, das immer wieder neu gelöst werden muss, sind die schematischen Gegensätze. Die braven und frommen Leut der Landgesellschaft stehen in absolutem Kontrast zu dem irrational Entfesselten der Wolfsschlucht und der Wilden Jagd. Die Männer sind ganze Kerle mit der Waffe in der Hand (oder sollen es dem Anspruch nach sein), die Frauen naive Weibchen mit Intuitionen, die sich nur nach der Ehe sehnen. Gut und Böse sind ebenso völlig klar definiert wie Ehre und Unehre. Und die gesamte soziale und politische Hierarchie eines Fürstenstaats unmittelbar nach dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg wird nie ernsthaft thematisiert.
 

Der literarische Ursprung des Stoffes in einer Sammlung von Schauermärchen, die auch Mary Shelleys Frankenstein und den ersten Vampirroman der Weltliteratur von John Polidori inspiriert haben, sowie historische Parallelen zu den großen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Umbrüchen der Entstehungszeit der Oper, eröffnen aber vielfältige Möglichkeiten, um das naive Märchen von den Freikugeln in ein zeitgenössisches Drama über Angst, Traum und das Unheimliche zu verwandeln. 

Der international gefeierte Regisseur Ersan Mondtag kehrt für diese Produktion nach Kassel zurück, wo 2015 mit Tyrannis seine erste Arbeit entstand, die zum Berliner Theatertreffen eingeladen wurde.

The premiere of Der  Freischütz took place in 1821 at the reopening of Schinkel's Berlin Schauspielhaus and was enthusiastically welcomed as the first German national opera. Since then, the popular work has been critically questioned by directors as intensively and diversely as only Wagner operas are otherwise. Because the dramatic problem of Friedrich Kind's libretto, which has to be solved again and again, is the schematic contrasts. The brave and pious people of the country society stand in absolute contrast to the irrationally unleashed of the Wolf's Lair and the  Wild Hunt. The men are real men with guns in their hands (or they claim to be), the women are naïve women with intuitions who only long for marriage. Good and evil are just as clearly defined as honor and dishonour. And the entire social and political hierarchy of a princely state immediately after the Thirty Years' War is never seriously discussed.
 

The literary origin of the material in a collection of horror stories that also  inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and the first vampire novel in world literature by John Polidori, as well as historical parallels to the major political and economic upheavals at the time the opera was written, open up a wide range of possibilities for presenting the opera transforming the naïve fairy tale of the Freikugeln into a contemporary drama about fear, dreams and the uncanny. 

For this production, the internationally acclaimed director Ersan Mondtag returns to Kassel, where  his first work, Tyrannis , was created in 2015 and was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen.
