The Amore – Una maschera di cenere,  a contemporary opera set to music by the Spanish composer Mauricio Sotelo, is staged by the German director and scenographer Peter Mussbach. The latter made his first opera directing in 1975. His curriculum vitae lists an impressive list of diplomas: neurologist, sociologist, legal expert and Germanist. Today he divides his time between his practice as a psychiatrist, teaching at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and staging operas. In recent years he has devoted himself almost exclusively to twentieth-century or new opera music. Mussbach is a fixture in important and innovative opera houses in Western Europe. Janáceks From a House of the Dead in La Monnaie and Stravinsky's  The Rake's Progress  and Alban BergsLulu  in Salzburg are some of his unforgettable productions of recent years. 
Maurico Sotelo, born in Madrid, studied with Luigi Nono. In his compositions for opera, voices and sounds reflect a hidden consciousness. He has a particular interest in flamenco vocal techniques and traditions, which he also integrates in the opera De Amore . Mussbach and Sotelo do not turn the opera De Amore into a philosophical treatise about love, but tell a love story between a man and woman, a love story 'pur sang' with all the contradictions and torments that belong in it.

De Amore – Una maschera di cenere, een hedendaagse opera op muziek van de Spaanse componist Mauricio Sotelo, wordt geënsceneerd door de Duitse regisseur en scenograaf Peter Mussbach. Deze laatste maakte zijn eerste operaregie in 1975. Zijn curriculum vitae vermeldt een indrukwekkende lijst van diploma’s: neuroloog, socioloog, rechtskundige en germanist. Vandaag verdeelt hij zijn tijd tussen zijn praktijk als psychiater, het lesgeven aan het Mozarteum in Salzburg en het ensceneren van opera’s. De laatste jaren legt hij zich vrijwel uitsluitend toe op twintigste-eeuwse of nieuwe operamuziek. Mussbach is een vaste waarde in belangrijke en vernieuwende operahuizen in West-Europa. Janáceks Uit een Dodenhuis in De Munt  enStravinsky's The Rake’s Progress en Alban Bergs Lulu in Salzburg zijn enkele van zijn onvergetelijke producties van de laatste jaren. 
De in Madrid geboren Maurico Sotelo studeerde bij Luigi Nono. In zijn composities voor opera weerspiegelen stemmen en klanken een verborgen bewustzijn. Hij heeft een bijzondere belangstelling voor vocale technieken en tradities van de flamenco, die hij ook in de opera De Amore integreert. Mussbach en Sotelo maken van de opera De Amore geen filosofisch traktaat over liefde, maar vertellen een liefdesgeschiedenis tussen een man en vrouw, een love story ‘pur sang’ met alle contradicties en kwellingen die daarin thuishoren.
