Vivaldi’s pioneering and eternal “Harmonic Inspiration” performed by leading period-instrument ensemble

Concerto Italiano and Rinaldo Alessandrini are universally celebrated for their superlative performances and outstanding recordings of Monteverdi and Vivaldi. The early music ensemble and its founder-conductor have won an impressive array of critical honours including five Gramophone awards. Founded in 1984 by renowned keyboardist and conductor Alessandrini, this passionate ensemble has reimagined the vibrant visions of Renaissance and Baroque composers. Famed for its natural and lively approach, Concerto Italiano, a leader in the field of period-performance style, combines pure harmony, virtuosity and colourful gestures with precise articulation and imaginative continuo playing.

Alessandrini is a trusted authority and foremost interpreter of early Italian Baroque music, and in this concert the maestro will lead the Concerto Italiano—including four violins (soloists), two violas, one cello, one double bass and one theorbo—while conducting from the harpsichord. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, the ensemble brings to the 52nd HKAF a thrilling performance of Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico (The Harmonic Inspiration), which was published in Amsterdam in 1711. This ground-breaking set of 12 fabulous violin concertos was widely performed in Italy and reprinted throughout Europe, with countless arrangements contributing to the immense popularity and emotional appeal of this extraordinary collection.
