All’epoca di Haydn, nella Chiesa delle Grotte Santa Cueva, presso la città episcopale di Cadice, nella Spagna meridionale, la cerimonia liturgica del Venerdì Santo si svolgeva pressappoco così: rivestite di un drappo nero le pareti, le porte e le finestre della Cattedrale, a mezzogiorno si chiudevano le porte del tempio e il sacerdote, a seguito di un breve preludio organistico, saliva sul pulpito per declamare la prima delle bibliche sette parole di Cristo in Croce e il sermone a commento di essa; quindi si recava all’altare ove si inginocchiava per circa dieci minuti, affinché l’assemblea si concentrasse in meditazione. Poi risaliva sul pulpito per declamare la seconda e via via le altre parole bibliche. La funzione della musica, oltre a fornire l’“Introitus” e l’“Exitus” era dunque di “commentare” quei dieci minuti di meditazione intercorrenti tra il sermone e la declamazione della parola successiva.
Nel 1785 la fama di Haydn aveva ormai conquistato una dimensione europea: da Parigi la società “Le Concert de la Loge Olympique” commissionava al musicista austriaco un gruppo di sei sinfonie; da Napoli Ferdinando IV una serie di concerti “per la lira organizzata” (una specie di organetto a manovella); da numerosi altri centri si levavano richieste al principe Esterházy, suo mecenate, affinché si concedesse al suo Kappelmeister il permesso di venire a dirigere le sue Sinfonie (arrivate a quell’epoca al considerevole numero di 82). Ma la commissione più singolare giunse ad Haydn da Cadice: sette “Adagio” orchestrali per la cerimonia del Venerdì Santo. «Non era una cosa semplice comporre sette “adagio” di una decina di minuti ciascuno senza stancare l’uditore» – avrebbe scritto l’austriaco anni dopo ad un suo interlocutore, giustificando il particolare compiacimento che gli diede l’aver brillantemente superato quell’insolita prova artistica. Il problema, in effetti, era innanzitutto dato dall’assenza di un modello di riferimento, in quanto le Sette parole erano musicalmente esistite sino a quel momento soltanto come genere polifonico vocale. Ma l’ostacolo fu superato con un accorgimento tanto semplice quanto geniale: chi osservasse la partitura haydniana delle Sette parola troverebbe nell’incipit di ciascun “Adagio” le sette espressioni bibliche stampate in corrispondenza delle note al rigo dei violini primi. La melodia dei violini, che poi diviene il tema principale di ogni movimento, è cioè articolata come se dovesse essere cantata, come se l’opera haydniana fosse una sorta di composizione vocale senza voci, o meglio con voci solamente teoriche. In realtà di vocale vi è solo lo spunto melodico iniziale, ma è quanto basta a determinare il differente carattere dei pezzi, nonostante il persistere della medesima marca agogica. L’elaborazione del materiale segue invece la logica sonatistica, propria della scrittura strumentale tout court di Haydn. Tutti i pezzi sono infatti strutturati in forma-sonata (ecco perché quell’ossiano 7 sonate… suggerito dal titolo), ad eccezione di quelli di cornice, che sono l’Introduzione e il conclusivo “Terremoto”, che è anche l’unico a carattere fortemente descrittivo e in tempo veloce (“Presto e con tutta la forza”).
La prima esecuzione ufficiale dell’opera avvenne a Cadice il 6 aprile del 1785, ma sembra che essa fu anticipata da due esecuzioni in forma privata avvenute a Vienna e a Bonn, ove tra gli orchestrali pare figurasse anche il giovane Beethoven. Oltre a quella originale per orchestra, esistono tre versioni dell’opera, rispettivamente per soli, coro e orchestra (divulgata con l’abbreviato titolo tedesco Die Sieben letzen Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze), per quartetto d’archi e pianoforte, ma lo “Joseph Haydn Institute” di Colonia, curatore dell’opera omnia del compositore austriaco, non ha mai stabilito definitivamente se esse furono vergate di pugno da Haydn stesso o se lo furono per opera di altri e da lui semplicemente autorizzate.

But the most unusual commission came to Haydn from Cadiz: seven orchestral ‘Adagios’ for the Good Friday ceremony. “It was not an easy thing to compose seven ‘adagios’ of about ten minutes each without tiring the listener,” the Austrian would write years later to one of his interlocutors, justifying the particular pleasure he got from having brilliantly passed that unusual artistic test. The problem, in fact, was first of all the absence of a reference model, since the Seven Words had only existed musically as a vocal polyphonic genre up to that time. But the obstacle was overcome with a device as simple as it was ingenious: anyone observing the Haydnian score of the Seven Words would find in the incipit of each “Adagio” the seven biblical expressions printed in correspondence with the notes on the staff of the first violins. In other words, the melody of the violins, which then becomes the main theme of each movement, is articulated as if it were to be sung, as if the Haydnian opera were a kind of vocal composition without voices, or rather with only theoretical voices. In reality, only the initial melodic cue is vocal, but this is enough to determine the different character of the pieces, despite the persistence of the same agogic brand. The elaboration of the material, on the other hand, follows the sonatistic logic typical of Haydn’s instrumental writing tout court. All the pieces are in fact structured in sonata form (hence that ossiano 7 sonate… suggested by the title), with the exception of the frame pieces, which are the Introduction and the concluding ‘Terremoto’, which is also the only one with a strongly descriptive character and in fast tempo (‘Presto e con tutta la forza’).
The opera’s first official performance took place in Cadiz on 6 April 1785, but it seems to have been preceded by two private performances in Vienna and Bonn, where the young Beethoven was among the orchestral players. In addition to the original one for orchestra, there are three versions of the work, respectively for soloists, choir and orchestra (popularised under the abbreviated German title Die Sieben letzen Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze), for string quartet and piano, but the ‘Joseph Haydn Institute’ in Cologne, curator of the Austrian composer’s complete works, has never definitively established whether they were written by Haydn himself or whether they were written by others and simply authorised by him.
