Other princes gave their wives jewellery, robes or palaces, Duke Alfonso II d'Este of Ferrara made madrigals as a present for his third wife Margherita Gonzaga. Almost every evening the best singers sang and played the "Madrigali segreti" in Margherita's apartments before a small inner-court audience, which were kept secret from the public. Only after years of complete privacy did the prince allow selected musicians such as Monteverdi and di Lasso access to the Concerti delle Donne. In this way, the “Ferrara model” gradually spread.

The Tyrolean harpist Margret Köll brings Margherita's "Concerti segreti" to life again together with an ensemble of exquisite singers and instrumentalists.
