Concert 7  Pedro-Pablo Prudencio: Ein deutsches Requiem Brahms

Even though the first drafts of A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms date back to 1861, it was only in 1866, after the impact of the deaths of his mother and his friend and protector, Robert Schumann, that the composer found the stimulus to complete this work, which reflects on life and death . Despite its title, Brahms's German Requiem departs from the world of sacred music and traditional funeral masses, and instead resembles more of a free meditation on biblical texts, in a format reminiscent of a oratory.In particular, the German character of the work is represented in the Lutheran spirit of the textual fragments, which treat death not as a dark phenomenon, linked to the final judgment and penance, but as a moment of encounter, peace and mercy. .
