Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade in A minor has become a signature piece for Chineke!, opening their first ever concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in September 2015, and the orchestra is delighted to bring it back here seven years on.

Commissioned for the Three Choirs Festival in 1899, the Ballade abounds in high energy and beautiful melodies.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Walker, whose intense Lyric for Strings follows.

Kanneh Mason then takes to the stage for a performance of Florence B Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement – which is actually in three distinct movements, the last of which is an engaging Juba dance, a style which originated in the Congo and became an African American plantation dance performed by slaves during their gatherings.

Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 completes the programme, conjuring up the atmosphere of the New World with its simple pentatonic melodies.

One of the best-loved symphonies of all time, it was also the first work recorded for CD by Chineke! Orchestra.
