The young Carlo Broschi (1705-1782) was born near Bari in southern Italy. Intended for a musical career, he was trained in Naples in 1714 by Nicolo Porpora, at the Conservatory dei Poveri de Gesu Christo. Porpora gave him his first successes, thanks to an exceptional voice covering 3 octaves.

After triumphs throughout continental Europe, Farinelli (his stage name) traveled to London from 1734 to 1736 to his master Porpora, who conducted the Opera of the Nobility, a rival musical society to Handel's, the King's Theatre. Farinelli shone there in the Neapolitan-style works of Hasse, Porpora, Caldara and Leo, while his London rivals were the famous Senesino castrati and above all Caffarelli, Handel's muse: this contest of stars delighted the London public, and earned us virtuoso arias composed by the greatest masters, intended for these exceptional singers at the height of their vocality. London covered Farinelli with glory, until his departure for Spain, which he was never to leave. On the way, he stops at Versailles and sings for Louis XV who gives him sumptuous presents...

Cecilia Bartoli, who had already embodied the voice of the castrati in her program Sacrificium , takes on the roles of Farinelli (her latest CD) and uses all her admirable vocal potential to give the tunes of Handel and his contemporaries their finest incarnation.
