A Sicilian drama; passions, jealousies and stained honors taken from a novel by Giovanni Verga turn into a few bars, a poignant cry of the violins and the scent of orange blossom; the scene is the dusty street lined with irises and prickly pears that leads to the glowing sea. Accompanied by the harp, a distant voice sings a serenade of love: so begins Cavalleria Rusticana, the opera that revealed in 1890 the twenty-six Pietro Mascagni as "new Italian maestro".
Light has always occupied an important place in Nappa's choreographies. Whether natural or artificial, it is a fascinating universe. “Where the light is brighter, the shadows are darker” says Goethe, and it is from the shadow, the opposing concept, that the idea of this new work for MaggioDanza comes from.
The darkness and greed of some symphonic works by Franz Joseph Haydn embrace this vision, infusing contrasting sentiments.
"I would like to paint light as splendor, rather than as a visible darkness. Each movement transmits a feeling: joy, melancholy, passion, confusion and excitement are staged and each of them is a crack through which the light shines.
Through the bodies and art of the dancers, in fusion with the harmony of the music of Haydn I weave my work, which is like a window through which the light can shine."

Un dramma siciliano; passioni, gelosie e onori macchiati tratti da una novella di Giovanni Verga si trasformano in poche battute, uno struggente pianto dei violini e il profumo dei fiori d’arancio; la scena è la polverosa strada bordata di giaggioli e fichi d’India che conduce verso i bagliori del mare. Accompagnata dall'arpa, una voce lontana intona una serenata d'amore: così inizia Cavalleria Rusticana, l’opera che nel 1890 rivela il ventiseienne Pietro Mascagni come “nuovo maestro italiano”.
La luce occupa da sempre uno spazio importante nelle coreografie di Francesco Nappa. «Dove c’è molta luce , l’ombra è più nera» dice Goethe, ed è proprio partendo dall'ombra che nasce questo suo nuovo lavoro per MaggioDanza. L’oscurità di alcuni brani sinfonici di Franz Joseph Haydn affianca e abbraccia appieno questa visione. Il coreografo mediante l’organico dei ballerini in fusione con le note di Haydn tesse la sua opera  che è come uno spiraglio attraverso il quale far trasparire la luce.
