After the creation of Carmina Burana, 42-year-old Carl Orff wrote to his publisher Schott: "You can now destroy everything I wrote earlier and which, unfortunately, you have printed. "My collected works begin with Carmina Burana." By this time the composer had written operas, cantatas, theatrical music, quartets and many songs.

Carmina means songs, verses, and Burana is the Latin geographical name of Boyer.

In 1847, the German J. A. Schmeler discovered in the Benedictboyern monastery over 250 song lyrics of an old Latin song codex from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and published them under the name Carmina Burana. The texts are by anonymous medieval authors. In the spring of 1934, Carl Orff came across Schmeler's Carmina Burana. For two years he worked with great inspiration on the score.

The cantata consists of three main parts, seven separate parts and 25 separate numbers in Latin, with the exception of Old German (from the middle of №7 to №10 inclusive). As for the plot, there is no consistent action here. The texts rather follow the order of the different situations. Thanks to its multifaceted rhythmic invention and simple formal structure of stanzas, Latin is not a "dead language" here, but a full-blooded one, close to the feelings of the ordinary, modern man.

In 1935, Carl Orff saw the wonderful Schmeler edition of the collection "Carmina Burana" with the miniature "Wheel of Destiny", which ignited his stage fantasy.

The premiere of "Carmina Burana" took place in Frankfurt am Main on June 8. 1937 and made a strong impression. The "Wheel of Destiny" was perceived as a symbol, reminiscent of how quickly successes and failures, happiness and unhappiness, power and failure change in life.

Man's triumph despite the falls - regardless of life's catastrophes and even death - is an idea that permeates the entire work.
