Carmina Burana (Latin for Beurer songs or songs from Benediktbeuern) is the title of a scenic cantata by Carl Orff from the years 1935-36. The texts in Middle Latin and Middle High German are taken from a collection of song and drama texts from the 11th and 12th centuries.

In 1934 Orff came across the edition of Carmina Burana published by Johann Andreas Schmeller in 1847. Michel Hofmann, a young law student and Latin and Greek enthusiast, assisted him in selecting and compiling 24 of these texts into a libretto, mostly in Latin and some in Middle High German and Old French. The selection covers a wide range of worldly themes: the fickleness of happiness and prosperity, the fleeting nature of life, the joy of spring's return, and the pleasures and dangers of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust.

The work is framed by a powerful chorus in honor of the goddess of fate, Fortuna (“Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi”), who is ultimately supposed to determine the fate of the people.

Carmina Burana had its successful premiere on June 8, 1937 at the Frankfurt Opera.

The composer and music teacher was born on July 10, 1895 in Munich. From 1900 he received piano, cello and organ lessons. His first composition was also published in the same year.

He gained early experience of making music in a group as a student at the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium, where he accompanied the school orchestra on the organ, piano or harmonium and took on solo parts as a soprano in the school choir. He also sang in the church choir on Sundays, and at home, accompanied by his mother on the piano, opera parts based on piano scores.

After Carl Orff had set poems by Hölderlin and Heine to music for voice and piano in 1911, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich from 1913 to 1914 and also devoted himself to music education. His most famous work was the Carmina Burana. He also drew on literary models (in particular from Aeschylus, Catullus, Friedrich Hölderlin and the Brothers Grimm) for other works. He died on March 29, 1982.

Die Texte in mittellateinischer und mittelhochdeutscher Sprache sind einer Sammlung von im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert entstandenen Lied- und Dramentexten entnommen.

Orff stieß 1934 auf die von Johann Andreas Schmeller 1847 herausgegebene Ausgabe der Carmina Burana. Michel Hofmann, ein junger Jurastudent und Latein- und Griechisch-Enthusiast, unterstützte ihn bei der Auswahl und Zusammenstellung von 24 dieser Texte zu einem Libretto, hauptsächlich in Latein sowie einigen in Mittelhochdeutsch und Altfranzösisch. Die Auswahl umfasst eine weite Spanne weltlicher Themen: die Wechselhaftigkeit von Glück und Wohlstand, die Flüchtigkeit des Lebens, die Freude über die Rückkehr des Frühlings sowie die Genüsse und Gefahren von Trinken, Völlerei, Glücksspiel und Wollust.

Eingerahmt wird das Werk von einem mächtigen Chor zu Ehren der Schicksalsgöttin Fortuna („Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi“), die das Schicksal der Menschen letztlich bestimmen soll.

Die Carmina Burana wurden am 8. Juni 1937 in der Oper zu Frankfurt am Main erfolgreich uraufgeführt.

Der Komponist und Musikpädagoge wurde am 10. Juli 1895 in München geboren. Er erhielt ab 1900 Klavier-, Cello- und Orgelunterricht. In diesem Jahr erschien auch seine erste Komposition.

Frühe Erfahrung im Musizieren in der Gruppe sammelte er als Schüler des Wittelsbacher-Gymnasiums, wo er das Schulorchester auf der Orgel, dem Klavier oder Harmonium begleitete und im Schulchor Solopartien als Sopran übernahm. Außerdem sang er sonntags im Kirchenchor, und zuhause, von seiner Mutter am Klavier begleitet, Opernpartien nach Klavierauszügen.

Nachdem Carl Orff 1911 unter anderem Gedichte von Hölderlin und Heine für Gesang und Klavier vertont hatte, studierte er von 1913 bis 1914 an der Königlichen Akademie der Tonkunst in München und widmete sich daneben der Musikpädagogik. Sein bekanntestes Werk wurden die Carmina Burana. Auf literarische Vorlagen (insbesondere von Aischylos, Catull, Friedrich Hölderlin und den Brüdern Grimm) griff er auch bei anderen Werken zurück. Er starb am 29. März 1982.
