Carmen made its debut on March 3, 1875 at the Op é ra-Comique in Paris. It was George Bizet's last effort, who died a few months after his debut under mysterious circumstances, disappointed by the failure achieved by the work. What today is unanimously recognized as the absolute masterpiece of the French master, at the time of the first performance was instead not appreciated nor understood by the Parisian public who were scandalized by the raw realism of the story and by its protagonists, very far from the canons traditional. Carmenin fact, it tells a story of violent and morbid love that the librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy drew from the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. The work was accused of vulgarity due to the protagonist Carmen, a sensual and strong-willed gypsy who lives her loves with extreme freedom and without hesitation. Don José falls madly in love with her, who gradually transforms from a passionate lover to a brutal murderer at her side. A murky affair populated by shady and not very reassuring characters, therefore, but with a highly refined musical guise that aroused the admiration, among others, of numerous composers such as Brahms, Wagner and Tchaikovsky.

Carmen debuttò il 3 marzo 1875 all’Opéra-Comique di Parigi. Fu l’ultima fatica di George Bizet, che pochi mesi dopo il debutto morirà in circostanze misteriose deluso dall’insuccesso ottenuto dall’opera. Quello che oggi all’unanimità è riconosciuto come il capolavoro assoluto del maestro francese, all’epoca della prima rappresentazione non fu invece apprezzato né tantomeno compreso dal pubblico parigino che rimase scandalizzato dal crudo realismo della vicenda trattata e dai suoi protagonisti, assai lontani dai canoni tradizionali. Carmen racconta infatti una storia di amore violento e morboso che i librettisti Henri Meilhac e Ludovic Halévy trassero dall’omonima novella di Prosper Mérimée. L’opera venne accusata di volgarità a causa della protagonista Carmen, una zingara sensuale e volitiva che vive i suoi amori con estrema libertà e senza remore. Di lei si innamora perdutamente Don José che al suo fianco si trasforma gradualmente da amante appassionato a brutale assassino. Una vicenda torbida e popolata di personaggi loschi e poco rassicuranti dunque, ma con una veste musicale di fattura raffinatissima che destò l’ammirazione, tra gli altri, di numerosi compositori come Brahms, Wagner e Čajkovskij.
