The opera was written in 1874, the premiere in this stage version took place in Perm in 2021

At the premiere of the author's version of "Carmen" in the Paris Opéra Comique, respectable bourgeois were shocked by the story of the murder of a gypsy by a jealous sergeant. Until then, such a plot could never have made it to the opera stage. Ten years later, Bizet's "Carmen" returned to the stage already as a masterpiece, which "is destined to reflect the musical aspirations of an entire era to the strongest degree." This happened thanks to Ernest Guiraud, in whose edition sharp dialogues were replaced by recitatives.

The version of Carmen staged by director Konstantin Bogomolov, conductor Philip Chizhevsky and set designer Larisa Lomakina is a new look at the textbook score. Three years ago, the same team presented Handel's oratorio The Triumph of Time and Insensibility, which became "the most extraordinary performance of the Russian opera scene in recent years" (Meduza). Perm's "Carmen" is the first major opera production by Bogomolov, who abandons the usual recitatives and returns dialogues to the opera.
