Bartóks opera Riddar Blåskäggs borg framförs tillsammans med det nyskrivna beställningsverket Judith, som spelas i dialog med originalet. I rollerna ser vi bland annat skådespelerskan Stina Ekblad och sopranerna Julia Sporsén och Alexandra Büchel som skapar två personas av karaktären Judith.

Malin Bångs egensinniga musik möter Bartóks och författaren Mara Lee har skrivit en laddad text som ger ytterligare en dimension till Balácz libretto. Likt en operornas Twin Peaks gör de två verken varsin resa in i det undermedvetna och berättar varsin sida av den grymma historien.

I Bartóks kortopera Riddar Blåskäggs borg ber den unga Judith sin nyblivne make Riddar Blåskägg, att öppna de sju slutna dörrarna så att ljuset kan flöda in i den mörka borgen. Blåskägg vägrar och ber henne att älska honom trots att han inte vill visa det som döljer sig i dunkel bakom dörrarna. I den starka tron att hon med sin kärlek skall göra honom hel så insisterar Judith på att få låsa upp dörrarna. Han ger med sig och en efter en öppnas de slutna dörrarna, var och en avslöjar en bit av Blåskäggs värld. Till sist har hon öppnat en dörr för mycket, och hans grymma öde avslöjas.

I det nyskrivna verket Judith, som inleder och avslutar helaftonen, reser vi vidare i det undermedvetna men nu är det Judiths rädslor och begär vi vandrar bland. Till skillnad från Blåskägg vill Judith att alla dörrar skall stå på vid gavel. Hon söker ledtrådar för att förstå livets brutalitet och skönhet.

Librettot till Judith är skriven av den prisbelönade författaren Mara Lee som gör sitt första operalibretto. Hon har givit ut ett antal diktsamlingar och flera uppmärksammade romaner som Salome, Future Perfect, Kärleken och hatet och nu senast Främlingsfigurer.

Musiken är skriven av Malin Bång, en av vår tids mest spännande och nyskapande tonsättare. Med ett expressivt, utåtriktat och energifyllt tonspråk fångar hon lyssnaren med sin detaljrikedom och framåtdrivande energi. Bångs musik blir en egensinnig och färgrik samtida partner till Bartoks expressionistiska opera. Judith blir hennes första opera.

För regin står den belgiske regissören Wouter Van Looy vars CV rymmer många intressanta och genreöverskridande produktioner som involverar kompositörer, musiker, sångare, författare och konstnärer. Hans uppsättningar rör sig oftast i gränslandet mellan opera och musikteater. Wouter är konstnärlig ledare för Muziektheater Transparant som tillsammans med Folkoperan beställt verket Judith liksom det musikaliska arrangemanget av Riddar Blåskäggs borg.

Riddar Blåskägg och Judith är en internationell samproduktion med Muziektheater Transparant, Belgien. Efter spelperioden på Folkoperan kommer uppsättningen att turnera i Europa.

Bartók's opera Knights of Bluebeard's Castle is performed together with the newly commissioned work Judith, which is played in dialogue with the original. In the roles we see, among others, the actress Stina Ekblad and the sopranos Julia Sporsén and Alexandra Büchel, who create two personas of the character Judith.

Malin Bång's wayward music meets Bartók's and writer Mara Lee has written a loaded text that adds another dimension to Balácz's libretto. Like the Twin Peaks of the operas, the two works each make a journey into the subconscious and tell each side of the cruel story.

In Bartók's short opera Knight Bluebeard's castle, the young Judith asks her new husband Knight Bluebeard to open the seven closed doors so that light can flow into the dark castle. Bluebeard refuses and asks her to love him even though he doesn't want to show what hides in obscurity behind the doors. In the strong belief that she will make him whole with her love, Judith insists on unlocking the doors. He gives in and one by one the closed doors open, each one revealing a piece of Bluebeard's world. In the end, she has opened one door too many, and his cruel fate is revealed.

In the newly written work Judith ,which begins and ends the evening, we travel further into the subconscious but now it is Judith's fears and desires that we wander among. Unlike Bluebeard, Judith wants all doors to be wide open. She searches for clues to understand the brutality and beauty of life.

The libretto for Judith is written by award-winning author Mara Lee , who is writing her first opera libretto. She has published a number of poetry collections and several notable novels such as Salome, Future Perfect, Kärleken och hatet and most recently Främlingsfigurer.

The music is written by Malin Bång , one of the most exciting and innovative composers of our time. With an expressive, outgoing and energetic tone, she captures the listener with her wealth of detail and forward-driving energy. Bång's music becomes a wayward and colorful contemporary partner to Bartok's expressionist opera. Judith will be her first opera.

Directed by Belgian director Wouter Van Looy, whose CV includes many interesting and cross-genre productions involving composers, musicians, singers, writers and artists. His productions usually move in the borderland between opera and musical theatre. Wouter is the artistic director of Muziektheater Transparant , which together with Folkoperan commissioned the work Judith as well as the musical arrangement of Riddar Blåskägg's castle.

Riddar Blåskägg and Judith is an international co-production with Muziektheater Transparant, Belgium and Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, Brazil. After the performance period at the Folkoperan, the set will tour Europe.
