The NDR Vokalensemble is giving a guest performance in Hanover with Handel's opulent oratorio "Belshazzar". In addition to Concerto Köln, conductor Václav Luks directs a top-class group of singers.

Best stage material for an oratorio
The Old Testament story of King Belshazzar and his wicked levity captivated artists of all ages. "...And wrote and wrote letters of fire on a white wall - and wrote and vanished", Heine once composed an ominous ballad. Master Rembrandt captured the horror of the divine fire writing in oil.

And Georg Friedrich Handel, as a lover of vivid Bible stories, could hardly ignore a treasure trove like this. After all, it contains everything that makes up immortal tales: legendary treasures, mythical settings, human overconfidence - and a deep fall.

Handel: A “Spiritual Opera”
Handel used this material to create what is probably his most dramatic oratorio. One could almost describe it as a "sacred opera" if there hadn't been a stage ban on biblical subjects in England at the time. The librettist Charles Jennens imaginatively embellished the biblical plot with ancient sources, and Handel alternated recitatives and expressive arias in quick succession for detailed stage directions.

The focus of the work, however, is the chorus: as a people of the Babylonians, the Jews and the Persians, it dramatically drives the action before it.

In addition to the NDR vocal ensemble, numerous specialists for early music will be performing, including the Spanish tenor Juan Sancho in the title role. Jeanine De Bique, one of the leading international sopranos, was hired as his mother Nitocris. Recently, for the 200th anniversary of Weber's "Freischütz", she took part in a spectacular production of La Fura dels Baus, which was broadcast on Arte. The role of the admonishing prophet Daniel is embodied by one of Italy's most sought-after countertenors, Raffaele Pe.

The award-winning original sound ensemble Concerto Köln will play under the direction of Václav Luks, an authority in the field of historical performance practice.

Die alttestamentarische Geschichte von König Belshazzar und seinem frevlerischen Leichtsinn fesselte Künstler aller Epochen. "...Und schrieb, und schrieb an weißer Wand Buchstaben von Feuer - und schrieb und schwand", dichtete einst Heine eine unheilschwere Ballade. Meister Rembrandt hielt das Entsetzen über die göttliche Feuerschrift in Öl fest.

Und Georg Friedrich Händel konnte als Liebhaber plastischer Bibelgeschichten an einer Fundgrube wie dieser kaum vorübergehen. Schließlich enthält sie alles, was unsterbliche Erzählungen ausmacht: legendäre Schätze, mythische Kulissen, menschliche Selbstüberschätzung - und einen tiefen Fall.

Händel schuf aus dem Stoff sein wohl dramatischstes Oratorium. Beinahe könnte man es als "geistliche Oper" bezeichnen, hätte damals in England nicht ein Bühnenverbot für biblische Sujets bestanden. Fantasievoll schmückte Librettist Charles Jennens die biblische Handlung mit antiken Quellen aus, zu detaillierten Szenenanweisungen ließ Händel in schneller Folge Rezitative und ausdrucksvolle Arien einander abwechseln.

Im Mittelpunkt des Werkes aber steht der Chor: Als Volk der Babylonier, der Juden und der Perser treibt er dramatisch die Handlung vor sich her.

Neben dem NDR Vokalensemble treten zahlreiche Spezialisten für Alte Musik auf, darunter der spanische Tenor Juan Sancho in der Titelpartie. Als seine Mutter Nitocris wurde mit Jeanine De Bique eine der international führenden Sopranistinnen verpflichtet, jüngst zum 200. Jubiläum von Webers "Freischütz" wirkte sie an einer spektakulären, auf Arte ausgestrahlten La Fura dels Baus-Inszenierung mit. Die Rolle des mahnenden Propheten Daniel wiederum verkörpert einer der gefragtesten Countertenöre Italiens, Raffaele Pe.

Das vielfach ausgezeichnete Originalklang-Ensemble Concerto Köln spielt unter Leitung von Václav Luks, einer Kapazität im Bereich der historischen Aufführungspraxis.
