Like in a magnifying glass, Sergei Rachmaninov shows the destructive power of human emotions in his two one-act plays based on models by Pushkin. In the opera of the same name (1893), Aleko murders the mother of his child as well as his rival. The stingy knight, on the other hand, who gave the title to another stage work by Rachmaninoff (1906), pays for his greed and his fantasies of power with his life. Elements of the European opera tradition, the musical language of the Russian school and even traces of Rachmaninov's visit to Bayreuth make these two pieces a special experience.
