The history of opera has never ceased to be haunted by women bewitching men. Alcina is no exception: she seduces her victims to the point of making them forget their own homeland. Danger of disordered love or the delights of self-abandonment? Beyond the marvelous, Handel's genius endeavors to paint in Alcina a wounded woman, deeply human and pathetic: the song of the fallen magician inspires us with a strange compassion. From this ambiguity, the chiaroscuro of feelings and the travesties of desire, the staging of Robert Carsen, who introduced the work to the repertoire of the Paris Opera, knows how to play with finesse.
