Bluebeard’s Castle was Béla Bartók’s opera based on his friend and poet Béla Balázs’s Hungarian libretto, a work rich in symbolism. Only two characters are featured in this story, which traces its origin to a French folktale about Bluebeard and his new bride Judith. In the original, Bluebeard and Judith elope and she visits her bridegroom’s castle for the first time. In conventional productions, the castle interior is dimly lit and contains seven doors, the space is dark and the atmosphere suffocating.
This version uses a newly-written English libretto by Daisy Evans and music arranged by Stephen Higgins. The dungeon-like castle is transformed into a happy home for Judith and Bluebeard, a place containing beautiful memories for both. However, Judith suffers from dementia, hence a rift widens between her and Bluebeard, and he becomes the person suffering from their sad fate. The mystery that shrouds the original Bluebeard’s Castle transmutes into a story about love and loneliness.
This new production of Bluebeard’s Castle is presented at the Beijing Comedy Theatre, in line with the BMF’s recent commitment to supporting the New Wave, where deconstruction of original textual and musical concepts provides the audience with new perspectives. The celebrated and forward-looking London Sinfonietta, which took part in the production’s world premiere, returns to the Beijing Music Festival to perform this work. Evans’ Bluebeard’s Castle won the 2022 Royal Philharmonic Society Opera Award and received great reviews in London and North America. This performance marks the production’s Asia premiere.

新版《蓝胡子城堡》在北京喜剧院上演，从传统的经典再次延续近年来北京国际音乐节歌剧新锐单元的理念，将经典作品嵌入不同语境的全新呈现，文学及音乐的解构将为观众带来又一种歌剧新视角。伦敦小交响乐团作为特邀乐团参与了这部作品的世界首演， 此次再次到访北京国际音乐节，这支颇具盛名且有前瞻性的乐团以室内乐编制演绎，对于当代歌剧制作的新进程来说是绝妙的加持。 此版《蓝胡子城堡》荣获2022 年英国皇家爱乐协会歌剧大奖并于伦敦及北美成功上演。此次演出为亚洲首演。
