The figure of the Thracian singer Orpheus, who used his sounds to win over the world of nature and the powers of hell, is one of the most important Western representations of music. The story of Orpheus, including the tragic fate of his love for Eurydice, was taken up by numerous authors of opera librettos who, fully understanding the convention of the myth, significantly interfered with its ancient redactions, often in order to meet the requirements of contemporary listeners. Thus, the originally planned scene of the title character being torn apart by the Bacchae in  Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo was softened by the apotheosis of the main character. The unfortunate return of the hero from hell (without his beloved) was also successfully solved in the famous Orpheus and EurydiceChristoph Willibald Gluck, first presented to the Viennese public in 1762. Close cooperation between the composer, librettist and choreographer led to the creation of an excellent work, refreshing operatic genres, in which the primacy of singers gives way to dramatic continuity. The myth of Orpheus has never truly ceased to inspire musicians, as evidenced by the twenty-year-old concert Drum of Orfeo by the Polish composer and percussionist, Marta Ptaszyńska, created twenty years ago. The cycle of ancient inspirations in the program of the concert is concluded with Richard Strauss's symphonic poem Thus Spoke Zarathustra , inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's famous treatise.

Postać trackiego śpiewaka Orfeusza, który za pomocą dźwięków zjednywał sobie świat przyrody i piekielne moce, stanowi jedną z ważniejszych zachodnich repre- zentacji muzyki. Historia Orfeusza, w tym tragiczne losy jego miłości do Eurydyki, podejmowane były przez licznych autorów librett operowych, którzy – w pełni rozumiejąc konwencję mitu – ingerowali znacznie w jego antyczne redakcje, często po to, by sprostać wymaganiom współczesnych im słuchaczy. I tak, pierwotnie pla- nowaną scenę rozszarpania tytułowej postaci przez Bachantki w Orfeuszu Claudia Monteverdiego złagodzono apoteozą głównego bohatera. Niefortunny powrót bohatera z piekieł (bez swojej ukochanej) rozwiązany został pomyślnie również w słynnym Orfeuszu i Eurydyce Christopha Willibalda Glucka, wystawionym po raz pierwszy dla publiczności wiedeńskiej w 1762 roku. Ścisła współpraca kompozytora, librecisty i choreografa doprowadziła do powstania znakomitego – odświeżającego gatunki operowe – dzieła, w którym prymat śpiewaków ustępuje ciągłości drama- tycznej. Mit o Orfeuszu nigdy tak naprawdę nie przestał inspirować muzyków, czego wspaniałym dowodem jest powstały przed dwudziestu laty koncert na perkusję i orkiestrę Drum of Orfeo polskiej kompozytorki i perkusistki, Marty Ptaszyńskiej. Cykl starożytnych inspiracji w programie koncertu domyka poemat symfoniczny Richarda Straussa Tako rzecze Zaratustra, powstały na motywach słynnego traktatu Friedricha Nietzschego.
