On the occasion of his 150th birthday on April 1, 2023, GMD Anna Skryleva insists on dedicating her own concert program to her great compatriot Sergei Rachmaninoff. After all, the two of them have a lot in common – with varying degrees of success as a pianist, composer and conductor. Exactly 100 years apart, both studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory. And both left their homeland for Germany and the USA. This is how Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony came about in 1906/1907 during a stay of several years in Dresden. First contacts to America
the composer knotted in 1909 during a tour. After his final emigration in 1917 he succeeded as a celebrated star pianist and conductor, but for years he lacked the inspiration to compose. Summer stays in Switzerland brought him closer to his old homeland. Here in 1934 he composed the virtuoso rhapsody on a theme by Paganini, the solo part of which he himself played at the premiere in Baltimore with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

Anlässlich seines 150. Geburtstages am 1. April 2023 lässt es sich GMD Anna Skryleva nicht nehmen, ihrem großen Landsmann Sergei Rachmaninow ein eigenes Konzertprogramm zu widmen. Schließlich verbindet die beiden – mit unterschiedlicher Intensität als Pianist:in, Komponist:in bzw. Dirigent:in erfolgreich – einiges. Beide studierten – im Abstand von genau 100 Jahren – Klavier am Moskauer Konserva torium. Und beide verließen ihre Heimat in Richtung Deutschland und USA. So entstand Rachmaninows 2. Sinfonie in den Jahren 1906/1907 während eines mehrjährigen Aufenthaltes in Dresden. Erste Kontakte nach Amerika
knüpfte der Komponist 1909 während einer Tournee. Nach seiner endgültigen Emigration 1917 reüssierte er als gefeierter Starpianist und Dirigent, fürs Komponieren aber fehlte ihm über Jahre hinweg die Inspiration. Sommeraufenthalte in der Schweiz brachten ihn der alten Heimat wieder näher. Hier komponierte er 1934 die virtuose Rhapsodie über ein Thema von Paganini, deren Solopart er bei der Uraufführung in Baltimore mit dem Philadelphia Orchestra unter der Leitung von Leopold Stokowski selbst spielte.
