Das Meer und die Mythen des Nordens, die kargen Landschaften und das fahle Licht – all das hat die Musik des estnischen Komponisten Lepo Sumera geprägt. In seiner 1. Sinfonie verwendet er zum Beispiel Naturtonleitern und eine Wiederholungstechnik, die aus dem archaischen estnischen Runo-Gesang stammt, in dem die Natur mit uralten Weisen beschworen wird. Ebenso stimmungsvoll ist die Musik in Rachmaninows letztem großen Orchesterwerk, den Sinfonischen Tänzen. Die stecken voller wunderbarer Farben und Klangeffekte, mit reizvollen Akzenten von Saxophon und Klavier. Indes geht es im ›Grand Concerto 4 Tubas‹ des Amerikaners John Stevens vor allem um die höchst ungewöhnliche Kombination von einem Sinfonieorchester mit einem Tuba Quartett. Entstanden ist es übrigens als Auftragskomposition für das Melton Tuba Quartett, in dem Hartmut Müller, Tubist im Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, Mitglied ist.

The sea and the myths of the far north, the barren landscapes and pale light – all these things shaped the music written by Estonian composer Lepo Sumera. In his 1st Symphony, for example, he uses modes and a repetition technique originating from archaic Estonian Runic songs, in which nature is evoked with ancient tunes. Similarly atmospheric is the music in Rachmaninoff’s last major orchestral work, the Symphonic Dances. These brim with wonderful colours and sound effects, and with delightful accents created by the saxophone and piano. Meanwhile, the “Grand Concerto 4 Tubas” by the American composer John Stevens is first and foremost a highly unusual combination of a symphony orchestra with a tuba quartet. It was written, incidentally, as a commissioned work for the Melton Tuba Quartet, of which Hartmut Müller, tuba player in the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, is a member.
