Guest conductor Christopher Ward, General Music Director at Theater Aachen, has a thoroughly British program of the 20th century in his luggage: It begins with the concert overture 'Satyricon', which premiered in 1946 and was inspired by the fragmentary satirical novel of the same name by the ancient Roman writer Titus Petronius Arbiter.

Cellist Gabriel Schwabe presents the 'elegiac concerto' 'Oration', which Frank Bridge composed in 1930: a eulogy set to music and a protest against wars and their futility.

Edward Elgar had to be 50 years old before he dared to write a symphony for the first time. The first few months of work were arduous, but then inspiration hit him and he wrote, in the words of his wife Alice, "obsessively all day long". Elgar himself found his work "wonderful, imbued with beauty" - and the premiere was a triumph.

Jahrhunderts hat Gastdirigent Christopher Ward, Generalmusikdirektor am Theater Aachen, im Gepäck: Am Anfang steht die 1946 uraufgeführte Konzertouvertüre ‚Satyricon‘, inspiriert vom gleichnamigen, fragmentarisch erhaltenen satirischen Roman des antiken römischen Schriftstellers Titus Petronius Arbiter.

Der Cellist Gabriel Schwabe präsentiert das „elegische Konzert“ ‚Oration‘, das Frank Bridge 1930 komponierte: eine in Musik gegossene Trauerrede und ein Protest gegen Kriege und ihre Sinnlosigkeit.

50 Jahre alt musste Edward Elgar werden, bis er sich erstmals an eine Sinfonie wagte. Die ersten Monate der Arbeit waren mühsam, doch dann überkam ihn die Inspiration und er schrieb – nach Worten seiner Frau Alice – „den ganzen Tag wie besessen“. Elgar selbst befand sein Werk dann auch als „wundervoll, durchdrungen von Schönheit“ – und die Uraufführung wurde ein Triumph.
