Er sei »auf den Wagner-Geschmack gekommen«, sagt Patrick Hahn, nachdem er in den letzten Spielzeiten dessen ›Tannhäuser‹ an der Oper Wuppertal und eine konzertante ›Walküre‹ dirigiert hat. Zudem steht der ›Tristan‹ schon in den Startlöchern. Der gehört mit vier Stunden reiner Spieldauer zu den längsten Opern überhaupt, der vierteilige ›Ring des Nibelungen‹ bringt es sogar auf insgesamt fast 15 Stunden. Deutlich kürzer ist hingegen der ›Ring ohne Worte‹, den der Dirigent Lorin Maazel für Orchester zusammengestellt hat, ohne dass die fehlenden Gesangssolist_innen einen Verlust an musikalischer Substanz bedeuten würden. Die Kombination mit Mozarts legendärer letzter Sinfonie Nr. 41 C-Dur erscheint im Angesicht von Wagners geradezu monströsem ›Ring‹ auf den ersten Blick überraschend. Doch »die Jupiter- Sinfonie hat mindestens genauso viel Kraft und Aussage«, so Patrick Hahn, »und Mozart schafft mit einer deutlich kleineren Besetzung einen Klangkosmos, der Wagners Riesenbesetzung in nichts nachsteht.«

He has “grown to like Wagner,” Patrick Hahn says. This may be the result of conducting “Tannhäuser” at the Wuppertal Opera and a concertante “Valkyrie” last season. “Tristan and Isolde” is also waiting in the wings. With a running time of four hours, it is one of the longest operas of all time. The complete four-part “Ring of the Nibelung” in fact has a total playing time of almost 15 hours. “The Ring Without Words”, arranged for orchestra by the conductor Lorin Maazel, is significantly shorter without losing any of the musical heft for lack of solo vocalists.
The combination with Mozart’s legendary last symphony, the Symphony No. 41 in C major, may initially appear a surprising choice, but “the Jupiter Symphony has at least as much power and expressiveness,” Patrick Hahn believes. “With a much smaller ensemble, Mozart creates a cosmos of sound that is in no way inferior to Wagner’s gigantic cast.”
